Barbara Re is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Camerino, School of Science and Technology, where she has served since 2020. She obtained the Scientific Qualification as a Full Professor in September 2022.  

  • Since February 2024, she has been serving as Head of the Master’s Degree Program in Computer Science at UNICAM.
  • Since October 2024, she has also been appointed Head of the Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Computer Science and Computer Science for Digital Communication.
  • Between 2020 and 2023, she served as Pro-Rector for Equal Opportunities and Well-being at UNICAM, and from 2017 to 2020, as the Rector’s Delegate for Equal Opportunities. 

Her research focuses on integrating formal methods and artificial intelligence into Business Process Management. Her main scientific contributions include: 

(i) the formalisation, verification, and animation of BPMN collaborative models through rigorous operational semantics and advanced debugging tools; 

(ii) the development of Process Mining techniques for collaborative and large-scale distributed systems, including process discovery, compliance checking, and event-log generation frameworks; and 

(iii) the integration of AI and Process Mining techniques for robotic and IoT systems, with particular attention to multimodal event extraction, activity recognition, and process-driven analysis of autonomous systems.  

She is the co-author of more than 157 scientific publications, including 41 journal articles indexed in Scopus. Her research has received over 2,700 citations on Google Scholar (h-index: 28) and over 1,500 citations on Scopus (h-index: 22).

ORGANIZATION OF SCIENTIFIC EVENTS (ongoing)       

25th International Conference on Perspectives in Business Informatics Research (BIR 2026) - October 7-9, 2026, at University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland – Olten, Switzerland

The main theme of the BIR 2026 conference, titled “Hybrid Intelligence in Business”, explores how human expertise and creativity can be complemented with intelligent solutions from the realm of Informatics and AI to increase organisational capabilities.

Process Technology Forum - BPM 2026 is taking place from September 27 to October 2, 2026, at York University - Toronto, Canada

The Process Technology Forum invites submissions on technical and engineering aspects related to the study, design, development and maintenance of software systems that support the modelling, simulation, analysis, enactment, and monitoring of business processes, “process systems” in short.

RESEARCH PROJECTS  (selection)

  • UPRISE: The project develops innovative education and training programmes that equip current and future professionals with expertise in key technologies such as XR, AI, Digital Twins, blockchain and IoT, while integrating sustainability, ethics and entrepreneurship into digital innovation.
  • ODECO: Towards a sustainable Open Data ECOsystem (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020). The central aim of the ODECO consortium network is to train the next generation of creative and innovative early-stage open data researchers, to unlock their creative and innovative potential to address current and future challenges in the creation of a user-driven, circular and inclusive open data ecosystem. The programme awarded 15 PhD degrees through joint supervision and training between the public and private sectors.
  • Learn PAd - Model-Based Social Learning for Public Administrations (EU Project, 7th Framework Programme, Technology-enhanced learning). Learn PAd built an innovative, holistic e-learning platform for PAs that enables process-driven learning and fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Fluidware - A Novel Approach for Large-Scale IoT Systems (MIUR-PRIN2017). The objective of the project is to develop a novel programming model for IoT services and applications, and the associated supporting platform, engineering methodologies, and tools, to ease the development of flexible and robust large-scale IoT services and applications.                                       

STEM PROJECTS (selection)

  • MEraviglIA: As the head of the coordination team for this large-scale regional pilot, she leads the integration of Artificial Intelligence into school teaching.
  • STEMpower: This project coordinates Industry 4.0 technologies, active learning, and guidance to help students discover the potential of STEM subjects.
  • CUL.T.: integrates technological and artistic-cultural knowledge by adopting a STEAM approach within European higher education institutions of a technical-technological nature.
